Today I went to school to help Mr. James, the history teacher on his WWII presentation. I was very excited that I was going to take a part in such a very iconic moment in the history of human kind. Mr. James chose me because I have been to war and I know how what is like. When I arrived at the High School, I got with Mr. James and we went over the classroom presentation. It was second period around 9:00 am and all the students were poring in to the classroom. It was a packed house, Mr. James combined classes with Mr. Rodriguez to have a better audience and to get more students involve. Mr, James started the class and for the next 30 minutes he talked about WWII. By this time most of the students were either sleeping or not paying attention. While Mr. James was talking I started to think that this is way students don’t like school. It was just boring and there was no interaction in the classroom between the students and the teacher. It was just like Tapscott 2008 video stated that ” education has not changed in the last hundreds of years because were are still using a system that is a one way education system from teacher to students”. By the time it was my part to start the presentation I told the class to stand up and stretch, I saw Mr. James reaction and he was not very happy about it. I started talking about the greatest combat soldier of all time and the most decorated in the history of the United States Armed Forces, Captain Audie Leon Murphy. I told the class his story and showed them some videos. The kids really related with him because, he came from a very poor background and wanted to serve his country. I started asking questions and the students started answering, I then called on students to share about any experience about friends or relatives that served during WWII. The kids really liked the class and one of the kids told me to be the new History teacher. I don’t think that I am a great teacher but I liked getting the classroom involved in the subject. Students learn when they receive information and also share it. Times have changed a lot and we need to start from scratch. The way that we have been teaching no longer works. Lets make school fun again.
